Specialty Summary

The Psychiatric Rehabilitation Direct Service Worker (DSW) provides comprehensive, community-based rehabilitative services primarily to children and adolescents. These services are designed to help young clients strengthen independent living skills, build healthy daily routines, stabilize mental and emotional health, develop positive social and interpersonal skills, and improve school readiness and community integration.

Services are provided in the home, school, community, and/or at the Healing Mind Wellness Outpatient Mental Health Center.

The DSW collaborates closely with families, teachers, medical/mental health providers, and other community supports to coordinate care. They are expected to deliver high-quality, age-appropriate care in compliance with local, state, and federal laws, adhering to COMAR and CARF regulations.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide in-person or telehealth direct care services to assigned child and adolescent clients at least six times per month.

  • Facilitate structured, age-appropriate skill-building groups for children and teens within the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program.

  • Implement individualized interventions outlined in each client’s Rehabilitation Plan, with a focus on developmental needs and educational support.

  • Assist in developing safety plans for high-risk youth and provide crisis support as needed.

  • Support families in reinforcing skills and strategies at home.

  • Make referrals to school-based and community resources (e.g., tutoring, mentoring, youth programs).

  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and case consultations with school staff, therapists, and family members.

  • Attend all scheduled trainings and professional development to strengthen skills in child/adolescent care.

  • Complete thorough and timely documentation as required by the agency.

  • Follow program policies and procedures in accordance with licensing standards.


Minimum Job Requirements and Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma with 3 years of experience working with children/adolescents, OR

  • 30 hours of college credits in healthcare, psychology, education, or related fields, OR

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services or related discipline.

Skills

  • Ability to engage and motivate children and adolescents in a supportive, respectful manner.

  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.

  • Flexibility to adapt approaches for different developmental stages and family needs.

  • Patience, creativity, and resilience in handling challenging behaviors.

  • Effective communication with children, families, coworkers, and school/community partners.

  • Sensitivity to cultural, social, and family dynamics.

  • Knowledge of program policies, child development, and trauma-informed care practices.

Experience

  • At least 3 years of experience working with children or adolescents in a mental health, education, or rehabilitation setting.

  • Familiarity with behavioral interventions, crisis response, and youth skill-building.

  • CPR/First Aid Certification (preferred).

  • CPRP Certification (preferred but not required).


Physical and Mental Demands

Physical Demands

  • Frequent communication, reaching, and manipulation of objects and office/school materials.

  • Regularly moving materials up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 25+ pounds.

  • Strong judgment and consistency when working with children and families.

  • Ability to remain calm and supportive in emotionally charged situations.

  • Capacity to work with diverse family systems and cultural backgrounds.
